Fun movie facts: When the movie Always (1989) came out we loved the movie and the song “Smoke gets in your eyes” by the Platters. So the song became our song. The song was first used in the film Roberta (1935). Always was filmed in Montana the year we had a lot of fires. The movie is a remake of “ A Guy Named Joe” (1943). The movie Always was also the last time we saw Audrey Hepburn. The movies are close to each other including some of the names. The story: “A Guy Named Joe” When adventurous World War II bomber pilot Pete Sandidge (Spencer Tracy) dies in an aerial attack after ordering the crew to safety, he meets "the General," a legendary dead pilot who assigns Pete to return to earth as a guardian angel for a new pilot named Ted Randall (Van Johnson). But when Pete learns that Ted is dating Pete's former girlfriend, Dorinda Durston (Irene Dunne), he must set aside his jealousy and prepare Ted for a dangerous bombing mission. “Always” Aerial firefighter Pete (Richard Dreyfuss) risks himself and his vintage World War II airplane in a constant and death-defying quest to fight forest wildfires, much to the dismay of his girlfriend, Dorinda (Holly Hunter). His love for Dorinda and the advice of fellow pilot Al (John Goodman) convince Pete to give up his perilous career, but he flies one last mission. Pete heroically saves Al's plane from certain destruction, but with supernatural consequences.
Joanie was asking the Lord for someone she could be with. The Lord told her in a real voice that she heard, “ don’t you think I can take care of that?” After Ray and Joanie started working on the quilt for her dad’s retirement they got a little closer but never really dated. They just were around friends and working on the quilt. Joanie had asked Ray to help with the quilt because he told someone he loved doing artwork of all kinds. So it was August and Joanie’s birthday was coming up. Joanie’s mom and dad had the military guys over to have a good home cooked meal. So Ray was coming over and he knew it was Joanie’s birthday. After all, his birthday was only 9 day’s after Joanie’s. So he had no clue what to get someone he did not know well. So he sent her a dozen yellow roses. Yellow for a friend. Joanie was a little quiet that day. She had told her mother that years before she had said she would marry the man that gave her yellow roses. So this story came out after Ray and Joanie got married. Ray was a new Christian and told the Lord he was not looking for a wife right now but just needed to grow in the Lord. Trust in the Lord to take care of your life and stop trying to take control.

The yellow roses story

Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4
