Dapper Day

April 28th and 29th 2018

When it merged with Delta in 1987, Western was the oldest continuously operating airline in the United States. Service started April 17, 1926, when Western Air Express took off carrying mail from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City. Western quickly launched a long string of industry firsts. Adversity and practical business needs spawned innovations in radio communications, weather tracking, marketing and in-flight services. Some are still in use today. This young lady was not only thinking of vintage but this is her mothers wings and name tag. She said her mother worked for Western Airlines for 8 years. Take a good look at the name tag. Can you see something that has changed over the years? Her name is Mrs. not Ms. I still feel that the Mrs. shows repect to the person to whom she is married. In the 80’s things started to change. It was called “politically correct.” Ray remembers going to classes in the military on how to talk to people and the things you could or could not to say. Also how to behave like a nice person. It was like the old 1950’s Etiquette Lessons for ladies. Just like any Dapper Day, we are so busy I did not write her name down. So if you know this young lady please let us know. You look great and we love it when people wear something handed down. Look at our Vintage Story link on the main page.
Weather was beautiful for Dapper Day at the Magic Kingdom. There are hundreds of photo opportunities throughout the day, and we took advantage of the beautiful weather to stroll the streets of the kingdom and enjoy all the sights and sound of the day. Of course, we can always find friends we know, and make new friends along the way.
Our friend, Lawrence Stoen, dressed as a member of a racing pit crew in a nod to his long-standing involvement with IndyCar racing, and especially the Indianapolis 500 and other races like IMSA sports car endurance races. His vintage adaptation was perfect to commemorate that heritage. We also love when we find the double decker bus on Main Street and can get a few pictures of it before it is off carrying people to the castle.
It is such fun finding acquaintances from prior years and prior events around the park. Some like LeAnn will stop and pose with the Dapper Day banner. Others just enjoy sharing their beautiful outfits. Many of our friends design and sew their own costumes. There is a special group of people who have a sewing group online who share ideas and answer questions for each other to help improve our skills. We also caught up with Nadine and Claudine who worked at the Germany pavilion in EPCOT for a year. They were just weeks from returning home to Germany, but both said they will return soon to come back.
Anerin not only sews for herself, but also makes custom orders for others, too. She is a master at the work she does, and always looks perfect.
Besides sewing beautiful clothing, Jane is a master at creating perfect accessories for her outfits. And she is one of the wittiest people you will ever meet!
Brittany and her beau, Ben. Brittany is tiny and can find the most wonderful vintage dresses to wear. She is adorable! Ben’s striped jacket goes well with her dress. Ben is 6’5” tall.
This is just a smattering of the people we saw at Magic Kingdom during the day. There are several old friends, but many were new acquaintances we made that day. We love seeing the variations in outfits and learning about the people who wear them. Some groups dress in coordinated outfits, which adds to the interest. And we love it when families attend together and the kids love to participate with their parents. It’s fun to pass on the passion for vintage dressing with the younger people.
Joanie says she has been stalking the lovely lady above for two years, trying to catch a photo with her and get her name. We finally found her and found out her name is Cortney. She always has the most elaborate hats, and they make her stand out beautifully. Her elegant husband is always dressed in exciting clothing, too, so they make a striking couple wherever they go.
Loren, Karen and their friends decided to dress as classic Mickey Mouse Club members for this Dapper Day. We think they did a perfect job. Even the baby was dressed perfectly. What a great idea!
Erin always finds the most amazing vintage hats. They complete every outfit to perfection. Erin is usually seen in the company of her sister, Anna, but for the past couple Dapper Days, they have brought their mother along with them, and they sometimes “divide and conquer” the parks.
Many
In addition to vintage clothing, many of the people attending Dapper Day pick a “theme” to represent with their costumes. The couple in the right top row photo, Daniel and Ann Marie, chose the Dole Whip theme for theirs. His suit had pineapples, they had pins that included a nod to Dole Whip and her dress was very indicative of pineapple. Daniel loves to wear colorful suits to enhance his theme. Daniel and Ann Marie had just returned from an extended honeymoon trip throughout Europe. They saw such wonderful sights and attended plays and ate marvelous foods. It was fun enjoying their adventure via the postings they made on social media. The group in the center of the second row always chooses a theme for their outfits, and always look perfect in representing that theme. This year they added Alan to their team because one of their members couldn’t attend on Saturday. Traci, on the top left, makes most of her outfits, and does amazing costumes to represent her character or theme. This year was no exception. The baby in the third row is one of our newest “friends”. His name is Xavier and he was about 4 or 5 months old, but is already dressing in dapper clothing, and became a part of the group very quickly. We think he likes the camera and we’re sure he will dress dapper his whole life.
Amanda looks like a shy, shrinking violet here, but she is lots of fun. She made her dress for this Dapper Day. She is very talented with doing videos for our group of friends.
Victoria brought her mother along to join in on the fun. (Looks more like a sister than a mother!) Victoria’s “Tinker Bell” dress was made by Anerin. You can see more about her in some of the photos and commentary above.

This is our friend Ash. She is an art designer, and her many talents include making Disney ears and custom made pins and jewelry She designed the large pin at the right, taken from the photo of us at Dapper Day in October of 2015. We were overwhelmed when this pin showed up as the symbol of the event we attended to Kiss the Streets of America Goodbye at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. We felt so honored! Since then Ash has designed many other pins and buttons to go along with various other events. She recently moved from the Orlando area back to New Jersey. Before she left, we saw her at Spring Dapper Day in the Magic Kingdom. She told us that she was giving us a goodbye hug, but not to worry, we will see her again sometime. Ok, Ash. We are waiting patiently for a hello hug from you sometime. Thanks for gracing our lives with your special gifts.
This large print is hanging in our living room. Taken by Mark Lepow
Joanie made her dress. We put in bigger buttons so it would stand out more. Ray cut out the hat and put the main part together. Joanie finished the hat with the piping that matched the dress. Ray started sewing gloves in the color of the piping but we found a pair at a store close by that matched.
