At over 200 years old, the Theatre Royal in Bath is one of England’s most reputable theatres with a seating capacity of over 900. The building itself dates from 1720 but the premises only became a theatre in 1805 and the venue remains a wonderful example of Georgian architecture. Here Hollywood photographer Ray Fuller was taking pictures of a new play opening after a long run of Shakespeare’s plays. He saw a young lady off to the side that looked like Actress Anna. But could it be Anna? She was to start shooting a new movie in Hollywood just days later, so why would she be here in Bath, England? He got closer and started calling her name, “Anna, Anna, Actress Anna.” At first he was thinking she might know his voice and not turn around. After all, he is married to Anna’s rival, the Oscar winning Joan. But then she turned his way. “Anna,” Ray said, “what are you doing in England? You are to start shooting your movie this week.” The young lady’s eyes lit up and she started to go backstage. “Anna!” he called. It was then that Ray started to ask about the young lady and who she was. The play scheduled to open was called “Hiding Out” and this young lady was to play the lead roll. Her name was Leigh Thomas. They said she has been playing lead roles in England for 10 years. When asked if she had been to the United States he was told she was born here in northern England in a small town called Bradford. Ray went to Bradford. He took the train north and started at the city hall of records, but had no luck finding anyone named Leigh Thompson. He did, however, find a record concerning a lady named Anna Thompson from the United States that paid for a building. From there he got the name of the caretaker of the building and then the name of a person that renovated the flat for Anna Thompson. Tom Brand, the man that did the renovation, said he received cash and was told never to tell anyone about who paid him. But he said the cost ran over the budget and he asked the owner for the final payment. The person was Anna Thompson, the actress from the United States. She said that would be all she would pay because, and he quoted, “You said you could renovate it for that price and that price is all you will get!” and “ I will put you out of business if you make waves.” But who is Leigh Thomas? Tom Brand, the builder, got mad and then found out that Leigh Thomas, the girl that the flat was for, was the twin sister of Anna Thompson, the actress from America. We are not sure why the sister was living here in a small town. Leigh would look for work but was not making enough money to feed herself so she took to acting. Leigh had changed her last name when she began her acting career to distance herself from any connection to Anna Thompson. Leigh rented the flat out and Tom Brand, the builder, asked her for the final payment but Leigh said, “Take that up with my rich sister who never wants to see me.” The last anyone knew was that Leigh left town and headed for London. Ray went back to Bath and started his investigation of this Leigh by talking to people in the theatre. They did know Leigh looked like the actress Anna (but if they said anything Leigh would just laugh about it and say, “Are you kidding? I don’t look anything like her. They said Leigh never talked about being a twin to Anna Thompson. Leigh moved up fast on stage in England and was earning good money. But when people would say, “You look just like that actress from the United States” she would say, “That lady can’t act and I look nothing like her.” But at last Ray got to talk to Leigh. “Do you know who I am, Leigh?” he asked. “Yes,” she said. We read all about Hollywood and your gossip. He took her aside and said, “I know who you really are. I have been to Bradford.” She picked up a flower vase and threw it at Ray. “Boy, just like your sister!” Ray said. “Get out!” Leigh said. Ray countered, “We can make this a great story. I can see the headlines now! Actress hides sister from public. Why?” Leigh said, “That would make a great story but is there money in it for me? We could make more of the story also, like, ‘So now, Anna, why did you pay for the flat in a small town and leave your sister no money? Why? Are you afraid she could be a better actress than you? Why are you hiding her?” Leigh said when Anna moved to Hollywood to be a star, she moved out of the house and took their mother with her. “I was so hurt. Anna said she would send for me but never did. Our mother became not only Anna’s mother but is also Anna’s agent. But when they both got busy and Anna got bigger parts they forgot about me. Anna moved me to England, far from Hollywood. We never spoke to each other again. I got to talk to my mother, but my mother said it is best you stay in England, Leigh. She said she would come visit me.” This reporter got hold of Actress Anna about her twin sister but there has been no word from Anna about her twin sister and no word from her publicist/agent mother about any of this information. We will continue to probe into this story and let the public know when we find more details. *** Actress Joan was asked to comment about this latest development, but all she said was that it is not a surprise considering who we are talking about.
