Sewing Projects
In June of 2017 a sewing group that I belong to issue a challenge. Each woman who chose to participate had to use the same dress pattern to sew a dress of their choice. We could each make our own interpretation of the dress. Their were two versions to choose from. One had a flared skirt and the other had a fitted skirt. I chose to use the flared skirt, which, by the way, included pockets, which I love! I kept reading on the group’s page that so many of the participants were having trouble fitting the bodice, so I did a practice bodice in muslin first. That turned out to be a good decision. Like so many of the others, I had to make some adjustments to make the neckline fit properly. Once my dress was complete, I knew it was too plain, so I remembered a swimsuit I had when I was a teenager. It had a row of white daisies around the neckline. What a great idea since this is a summery-looking dress! So I added the trim and it made a world of difference. A little shrug sweater completed my look.
In July, all the ladies who accepted the challenge got together to show off the dresses they had created. It was fun to listen to why they chose the material they did, or the issues they had while they were constructing the dress. Each dress had its own personality, and they were all wonderful. A few of our men tagged along to see how the ladies looked. It was a fun evening just sharing stories and ideas with each other.
I modified my straps on the dress to fit my style a little better.
Then experiment with different accessories to see which ones you like the best to complete the outfit. Sunglasses are a must for the Florida sun, and these had daisies around the lenses, so they went right along with the trim on the dress. I carried a parasol the day of the get-together, too.

Kimberly and her mother went to a thrift store and found a pretty sheet that was big enough to make her dress. Her mother sewed the dress, and saved the tag from the sheet to use inside the pocket to show where it started from. Such a cute idea!
Traci finished her dress the night before. If you look closely, you can see that the skirt material is iridescent, with kind of an orange overtone.
